Name: Pharos
Canon: Persona 3
Gender: Male
Age: It’s Complicated. (Appears to be about ten years old. But seriously who even knows.)
History:
Once upon a time, there was a world filled with creatures called Shadows. Some nut got the idea to bring them together in hopes of harnessing their power. Many believed that he wanted to use them to create some great machine, but what he really wanted was to bring about Death, to summon the end of the world. One of the scientists working under him found out and sabotaged the experiment, separating the Shadow into 13 different parts, each representing one of the major arcana. As his final act, he left a message pleading for the future not to destroy these Shadows, because doing so would cause them to combine and create Death once again.

The thirteenth of the separate arcana, a weakened Death, was confronted by the last remaining anti-Shadow unit, Aigis. Unable to defeat him, the only thing she could think to do was seal him inside the nearest living thing- a young boy.

He rested, unknown, inside the boy for many years. During this time, he subconsciously lead him back to Port Island, but was also influenced by him and developed a human form, and a basic understanding of human emotions. Ten years later, when he had returned to Port Island, he walked into his new dorm to see a young boy with dark hair and bright blue eyes, offering him a contract.

Over the course of the next few months, the boy appears in the PC’s room during the Dark Hour (the hour of time between one day and the next), often talking to him about ‘ordeals’ (the coming of the next full moon, and it’s accompanying boss fight), as well as referring to ‘the Fall,’ which he admits to not entirely knowing everything about. After ever major shadow is defeated, the boy regains more and more of his memory, eventually telling the PC that his name is Pharos, and requesting he be his friend, thus forging the Death social link. By the time the last arcana has been defeated, Pharos remembers his role and bids the PC a final farewell, telling him he will always remember and cherish their conversations.

Personality:
Pharos, for all intents and purposes, is a small, creepy child. At the beginning, he hardly remembers anything about who he is, but he has an awareness and understanding of anything included in the Dark Hour. Because he’s not really human, not to mention what he actually is, Pharos has little trouble discussing death, and even admits that before knowing the PC, he never considered it to be a problem. He’s very fatalistic, believing that death and the Fall are both inevitable concepts.

Despite this rather depressing (to the PC, not him) outlook, Pharos is very curious about the PC’s experiences with life and emotions, developing a clearer idea of what it meant to be human through him. With him (because he can’t be seen by anyone else), he’s generally very friendly and willing to answer questions... provided you ask the correct ones.

Because the PC is the only one who can see him, Pharos is often very lonely. This doesn't come through but so often because he cherishes his time with the PC, but he goes so far before he leaves as to call their friendship a 'miracle'. He truly enjoys the little time they have to converse, and treasures the memories he has with him. However, even at the end when he recovers all of his memories of what's to come, he shows very little in the way of remorse, focusing on how much he cared for PC in contrast to the fact that he was going to destroy his world. This could indicate little care for anyone outside of his personal social circle (small as it is), instead mourning the loss of a friendship than a mass loss of life.

Pharos's experience with emotions is... minimal, to say the least. Before his first interactions with PC, his only experience with them has been indirect, through his observations of the main character during the past ten years (and, considering the main character tends to keep a lid on his emotions, there wasn't a whole lot to work with there). However, over the course of several months, he learns more and more about them, and while he's certainly never on the same level as a kid his apparent age would normally be emotionally, he clearly improves. There's even a point where he is very visibly and clearly distressed when the pieces are starting to come together, as well as feeling both sadness and joy at the end of his social link, both upset that their time must end and happy that he ever experienced it at all. At the point he'll be coming from, he can experience a full range of emotion, even if he doesn't entirely know what they are or what he's supposed to do with them.

In terms of stress, Pharos would likely react to stressors with curiosity at first. He's never really dealt with stress before- therefore it is strange and new and interesting. However, he is very likely to decide rather quickly that he doesn't like it. In that case, he would likely try to remain calm and sort his way through it- but given particularly heavy stressors, he is likely to wind up overwhelmed by the emotion and a bit paralyzed by it until he can figure out how he's supposed to deal with it, or he will just shut down emotionally and revert to very early-game Pharos emotionality until he can sort through it. He's going to attempt logical approaches, but with such a weak handle on most emotions it's likely not to work out the way he wants it to.

Powers/Abilities:
Aside from showing up in the PC’s room in the dead of night, Pharos shows no overt powers during the course of the game. However, at the canon point I am taking him from, all the seperate Shadows are now joined with him so he theoretically should be able to transform into Death.. Death’s powers are also unknown, but they are probably similar to that of Thanatos. He is also incapable of being killed by anyone but the PC, and even then it would only kill his form, not Death itself.

Keepsakes/Mementos: The cards 0-XIII of the major arcana in tarot, the PC's headphones/MP3 player, and the contract he gave the PC the first time they met.
Sample: [Note: using Minato as the name for the PC just to have something there.]
It’s the first time that Pharos has really seen the sun. He’s only ever seen the Dark Hour, with the entire world bathed in the green glint of moonlight (which he’s not even really aware is an unusual color for the night). He was sitting on the edge of Minato’s bed, eyes towards the window and the rising sun while he waits for the boy to wake up. It’s... nice. He’s glad he got to see it.

But he feels the stir of Minato waking, and Pharos directs his attention back to the boy with the small smile he’s learned how to make. “Good morning.”

He has his memories back. He knows what will happen next, to himself, to his world. But Minato has such great potential... he doesn’t know what will become of his only friend. Pharos can’t imagine that even he would be able to survive against Nyx, and he finds himself saddened by the idea. It’s been an eventful year, but he wants it to keep going. He has told Minato that he will always cherish the memories they’ve made through these interactions, and he will, and he’s happy he had them... what is this feeling, though, the one that wishes it didn’t end here? That their friendship, as steadfast as it was, could remain uninterrupted?

Pharos doesn’t quite know how to articulate these feelings. After all, the act of feeling in itself is relatively new to him, and there is still a great deal of it that he doesn’t understand. But he tries to communicate it the best he can. Even though he can not say why, it is important to him to say goodbye. And... perhaps, even though he is going to disappear, the bond forged by their friendship will not be so easily broken. But even as he says these words, he provides no explanation, no reason for why it is that he must go. And once again, he is not sure why.

Death is a concept that Pharos is very familiar with. Even when he and Minato have talked about death, the loss of those whom Minato held dear, it did not bother him and did not do so until he found himself becoming rather attached to Minato. He does not want Minato to die. The thought... upsets him. But time leads all to the same end, and that time has come. For Pharos. For the whole world. So why should he not say so? Could it be because he believes Minato would find the knowledge painful? Especially since there truly is nothing that can be done?

He vanishes from his spot next to the bed, reappearing at the end of it and watching the still half-asleep boy. “...It was fun while it lasted,” he says, smile sad and voice wistful, “Farewell.”

Pharos closes his eyes, as he first feels himself disappear from Minato’s view... and then simply ceases to be.

Mindset: Pharos is very fatalistic, and his death is part of what was going to happen no matter what. He accepted it gracefully, though not without sadness. He was upset to have to leave the PC and their friendship, though he held the promise for them to be friends and was happy to have their memories. He also isn’t terribly happy about the fact that his only friend’s world is going to be destroyed, but, you know. Details. He will be more surprised by the fact that he still exists than anything else, and in general will be very calm about it all.
G̶̶l̨͡i̵͢t̷c͝͠h̕é͠s̷̷͡: Pharos doesn’t have a lot of experience with fear- he was around for a brief enough period of time that it didn’t come up in the very secluded setting that he was in. But he has the emotional capacity for it so this will be fun. Mundane things don’t really scare him- and yes, death is included in the ‘mundane.’ He is more likely to be frightened by the abstract, the lose of people he cares about for no good reason. ‘Fate’ is considered a good reason to him, though being forced to call fate into question could also freak him out a little. An interesting thing to play with could be that, as the Death arcana, he represents change. This doesn’t mean he wants everything to change, he just knows that it eventually does. Changes for the worse or things that are clearly bad might upset him a bit too.
